It may be true of any art—perhaps of every art—but when you work with clay, you do not work alone.

I often have to ask the clay to quiet down. To let me say my piece. She has so much to tell me: how slowly she wishes to be worked, how much rest she requires, how far she is willing to be pushed. She speaks constantly. Then she waits until my back is turned, until the kiln door is closed, and there, in private, she stages her own revolution.

The results are always a kind of magic. Sometimes they emerge exactly as I imagined—a crystalline form, silent now, assured in its presence. Other times, if I have ignored her warnings, the privacy of the kiln becomes an opportunity for rebellion. She undermines her own solidity, cracks apart, or shifts in the heat, transforming into something beyond anything I could have planned.

We have been in conversation for years, and I have never heard her voice more clearly than I do now. She tells me not only what she needs, but what she dreams of becoming.

Make me into a tower for a bug.

Make me something that catches the flicker of candlelight.

Make me a place to rest the book you're reading.

Give me the curve of that hilltop.

Or the neck of that column you once saw. Remember? Give me that stature. That grace.

I'd like to be an oversized chess piece.

Today I want to be a scooting slug. Can we do that?

So I listen.

And together, we do that.

These works are the result of that ongoing conversation—small negotiations between material and maker, between intention and surrender. They are moments where our needs, limitations, and imaginations briefly align.

This is what the earth has told me.
